02Nov08 Stamps Road Handicap
Results

The Savings And Loans Adelaide Hills Veterans Cycling Club conducted a handicap event last Sunday. The handicap event consisted of four laps of the picturesque and popular Stamps Road circuit. Starting at the clubs Flaxley headquarters riders headed to Macclesfield and returned to Flaxley via the climb up Stamps Road for a total of 50 kilometers.

Although this was a handicap event, many of the starters were placed in one bunch, giving the limit markers somthing to worry about and the scrath riders something substantial to chase. Mt Barker resident Dutchy Wieringa and Lobethal’s Graham Silsby were the front markers, followed by the main bunch starting at 12 minutes down. Steve Hemmings of Mt Barker and Macclesfield resident Digby Ambrose made up the chopping block group at 20 minutes and Paul Bell of Murray Bridge and Mike Elleway from Stirling were the back markers at 25 minutes.

The first rider to emerge out of the top of Stamps road on the first lap was Silsby with a one minute break on Wieringa , and a further six minutes back to the main bunch. The main bunch was still holding together with Mark Bloomfield at its head, followed by Charlston resident Andrew Size and Sarah Rawlinson of Mt Barker.

At the second time through this point Silsby had increased his lead to 3 minutes and Bloomfield was now in second place. The main bunch was starting to feel the pinch and, although its members were still in touch with each other, they came through at about fifteen second intervals. Ben Knobben, in his first ever race, was now leading out the main bunch from Rawlinson.

On lap three Bloomfield was leading with a determined Silsby hanging onto second place. Then there was a five-minute gap to Ben Knobben. Riders were now coming through at one and two-minute intervals and significantly the back markers Elleway and Bell had moved into the middle of the field and were posing a threat to the leaders.

As this hilly event evolved on the fourth and final lap there was never going to be a bunch finish. Bloomfield kept his lead to the finish line; Silsby rode solidly to second spot, but the big mover was Elleway who came through the field impressively to finish in third place. The previously untried Knobben rode to a creditable fourth.

A great mornings ride under clearing skies and all entrants finished thankful that the early rain stayed away.
