Father’s Day Handicap RESULTS

Tony FACKRELL of Balhannah and John Bleakley of Mt Barker were the first riders sent away by the starter in the Fathers’ Day Handicap conducted by the Adelaide Hills Veterans Cycling Club. Starting from the main street of Macclesfield riders headed out on a 58k course through Flaxley, Echunga, Meadows, Ashbourne, Strathalbyn and back up the hill to Macclesfield.

Coming out of Echunga, Dan Freer of Lobethal had started to gain on the lead pair, and Mt Barker’s Shannon Hemmings and Charlston’s David Paul were moving along quite smartly, having determined to keep Echunga’s Suzie Gray off their wheel. The backmarkers who had up to 20 minutes handicap were not yet making an obvious impression.

Through Meadows, Frackrell and Bleakley were pushing themselves hard to stay in front. Further back Freer was fading a little as Hemmings and Paul were starting to make some time on the leaders. As riders began flying at 70kph plus down Bulls Creek Road past the Paris Creek turnoff, the back-markers, including Murray Bridge’s Paul Bell, were starting to close in on the peloton.

Still, at Asbourne, the front-markers were making it a race and riding eastwards across the hills they were the first to see the broad reach of the Angus Plains . The back-markers gathered in the peloton by the time it entered Strathalbyn and as the riders headed north, Bell, along with Macclesfield’s Digby Ambrose and Martyn Risby of Mt Barker, began to dominate the event.

Breaking away from the main bunch this trio worked together until Bell made a decisive move coming up out of Doctor’s Creek, leaving Ambrose and Risby to sort out their own affairs. Risby made repeated attacks, each one apparently failing and Ambrose was having none of it knowing that after each attack Risby would fall back to him. Yet again Risby attacked and Ambrose waited for him to fall back; only this time Risby just kept going and by the time Ambrose realized what was happening the gap was too wide for him to catch up.

1st & fastest time: Paul Bell
2nd : Martyn Risby
3rd : Digby Ambrose
1st female: Shannon Hemmings
