Flaxley GSE
The last official day of winter lived up to its billing when local veteran cyclist tackled two circuits around Flaxley via Echunga, Meadows and Macclesfield, in a graded scratch event over 56k conducted by the Adelaide Hills Veterans Cycling Club.
D Grade departed at 9.00 am and fairly quickly a lead working group had formed comprising of Mt Barker pair John Horsnell and David Pfitzner, and Lobethal pair Graham Silsby and Dan Freer. On the 10% climb above Meadows Pfitzner applied some psychological pressure by forcing the pace and by Macclesfield he had established a lead of 40 seconds. The ever changing weather was not being kind to solo riders so Pfitzner’s break at this stage was not decisive. Pfitzner repeated his tactic again on the second lap and by the climb from Macclesfield to Flaxley he was riding alone, going hard for the victory. Dan Freer had other ideas. Well known now for his cat and mouse tactics, Freer managed to overhaul Pfitzner within sight of the finish line to get home first by just 2 seconds.
C grade departed at 9.05 and they too started working well with Mt Barker’s Sarah Rawlinson, Charlston’s David Paul, Echunga’s Suzie Gray and Tranmere’s Lindy Kronen. Forty minutes later David Paul’s event was over after suffering two flat tyres. The remaining three worked hard through the rain, wind and hills until Kronen and Gray dropped Rawlinson by the time they went through Macclesfield on the second lap. On the climb to the finish at Flaxley nothing could separate Kronen and Gray. For the second time in the event a mechanical glitch would intervene. As both riders unleashed their finishing sprint, Kronen’s shoe unclipped from the pedal and her sprinting effort evaporated. Gray comfortably held Kronen at bay and took victory by a couple of meters.
The combined A & B grades departed at 9.10 and the field quickly broke up as Murray Bridge’s Paul Bell put the hammer down wanting to finish as quickly as he could. Bell’s main challenger, Macclesfield’s Digby Ambrose, was riding within himself and as the atrocious weather continued he slowly picked his way through the riders that started 10 minutes before him.Bell’s tactics carried the risk of him tiring before the end of the course, but his confidence was justified as he powered through to the fastest time of the day and to win his grade.
Results:
A /B Grade; 1st, Paul Bell
C Grade; 1st Suzie Gray
D Grade; 1st Dan Freer
